Feel Good Friday 2/17/17

feelgoodfriday

Welcome to the first edition of Feel Good Friday! Every Friday I’m going to recap all the things that left me with a warm, fuzzy feeling that week. They can be things that happened in the world or just things in my life. I know sometimes at the end of a LONG week I could use a little happiness.

The first thing I’d like to share with you this week is the sweet Valentines some of the little ones I work with made for me. You’ll probably hear me saying this over & over again, but I love my job oh so very much! I get paid to hang out with kids…it’s amazing.

Then, one of my other favorite moments of this week is when I babysat one of my little buddies and we watched Shrek. They pay me for this stuff! She had never seen the movie and neither had I! I actually really enjoyed it. She said she was a little creeped out through it, but she liked it.

Next up is this glorious little beagle that took the time to do some licking during the Westminster Dog Show. Definitely something my dog would do. I’m sure if I were doing all these tricks and had people cheering I’d get a little distracted too! You can watch the video here, and I definitely recommend it!

Then we have this cute little story about a girl who lost her memory and fell in love with her boyfriend all over again. I love feel good stories like this. It gives me hope for this world, no matter what is happening that we hear on the news, there’s little stories like this that really need more recognition.

What were your favorite moments this week? Something special that happened in your life? A little piece of good news? Share it with me in the comments! And make sure you’re signed up for my mailing list so you can get these in your inbox every week!

Top 5 Inspirational Quotes to Boost Your Week

There are probably about a million quotes floating around online. From quotes from historical figures, famous people, and just random people. It’s easy to get lost in the sea of inspiration, which is by no means a bad thing!

top-5-motivational-quotes

I’ve decided to put together a list of my favorite quotes that inspire me to become a better me. This is both for me and you! It’ll be nice to have a list to look at when I’m feeling down and unmotivated. Hopefully it’ll help you too! Please let me know in the comments!

So, let’s get started. Here are my top 5 favorite inspirational quotes that I hope you will also love! I’ve included my own thoughts along with some beautiful little graphics I made up.

Kindness is a language the blind can see and the deaf can hear.  – Mark Twain

Up first is a quote that is dear to me. I strive to be a kind person. I think if everyone did the world would be a much better place. Kindness can get you far in life. Most people don’t want to be surrounded by people who are constantly rude (I know I don’t!)

I work with children. Sometimes I have a child come up to me, complaining that their friend called them a name (my favorite so far was “poop in the butt”…yes a child called another child that! It was so hard to keep a straight face.) So, I go talk to their friend. Most of the time it turns out that this child that came to me was the first one to hurl the insults. I get the want to lash back, but it doesn’t make it okay. If you meet rudeness with kindness, you will be the one who came out on top.

Nobody comes up and complains about the kind kids. I’m talking about those kids who are just too sweet for words. And I have overheard a little one being rude to one of these kind kids. They responded with kindness and they were successful.

Happiness cannot be traveled to, owned, earned, worn, or consumed. Happiness is the spiritual experience of living every minute with love, grace, and gratitude. – Denis Waitley

Most people place their happiness in the future. “If I could only get a new car I would be happy.” “If only I could make a couple extra bucks an hour I would be happy.” They forget to live in the moment and enjoy their present. Yes, it would be great to get these things, and it’s definitely important to have goals and dreams for your future, but you can be happy right where you are.

Focus on the little things, and happiness will follow. Even if everything seems to be going wrong, there’s always one little thing. Focus on that until it makes its way into your heart.

Take time to do what makes your soul happy.

This is very important to me. Take time to do things you enjoy. A lot of people talk about how self-care is so important. You know why? Because it is! You need to take time to focus on you.

Whether it’s taking a nice, long bubble bath after the end of a stressful week or setting aside time to work on a hobby you enjoy, make the time. I am positive you’ll see a difference in your life.

If you’re a busy person, schedule that time into your life. I am sure you can afford a half hour to meditate, pamper yourself, veg out and watch some Netflix, work on a hobby, or whatever makes your soul smile.

Broken crayons still color.

This is such a short and simple quote, yet so powerful. You may feel broken. I know the feeling. I’ve been there and sometimes still feel broken. I have bipolar disorder. I have to take medication to help my brain function normally. It cannot be cured, just treated. Yes, I feel broken. Yes, in my mind it’s a fact that I am broken.

But still, I color. I live life. I contribute to the world in a positive way (mainly through working with children.) I try to be kind because I know how it feels to not be treated kindly. I still wake up everyday and give it my best. You can too, I believe in you. I know you can do this. You can still color. You can still color brightly and vibrantly.

Failure is a great teacher, and, if you are open to it, every mistake has a lesson to offer. – Oprah

Yes. Yes. Yes. You cannot learn these lessons without failing first. You can’t become good at something without failing. This article features 15 famous people who have experienced failure. I suggest reading it when you feel you may never succeed.

Keep trying. You can’t master a skill without taking that first step and failing along the way. There are powerful lessons hidden in those failures. If you look closely, you’ll see them.

I really hope these quotes helped to boost your week on this hump day! Please, let me know your favorite quotes in the comments or on my Facebook page!

How to Create a Cheap Romantic Gift (With Free Printable!)

Tomorrow is Valentine’s Day! I’d be more excited if it wasn’t on a Tuesday. My boyfriend and I both have to work, plus I have an appointment with my podiatrist. We’re planning on celebrating Friday. I’m not quite sure where we’re going. Any suggestions?

I decided to get a little crafty this year for Valentine’s Day. We hardly ever have date nights, so I wanted to incorporate that into my gift. One of the rules for these date nights is no cell phones allowed! We’re both guilty of this, so it’ll be a change of pace for both of us. I want us to fully enjoy each other’s company instead of paying attention to our phones the whole time.

I’ve seen the idea of a date night jar on Pinterest for a while now. It’s the perfect idea for us. I took a trip to AC Moore and found the cutest little jar, some ribbon, paint, and jumbo popsicle sticks.

I got three colors of paint. Before hand I had written out my date ideas in a cute little notebook I have. I keep all my blogging ideas in it. It’s so handy to just throw in my purse. I came up with 3 categories. At home dates, out but cheap, and out but a little more pricey.

I chose to color code the sticks so it would be easy to pick a date that fit our budget and our desire to stay in or go out.

I started out by putting some tape on the top of the popsicle sticks so the paint would end in a nice line. I didn’t have painters tape, but regular scotch tape did the job! The first few ones I started with a little dot of paint on each stick, then set them aside to dry. Once one side was dry I painted the other side.

After the first batch, I decided it would be quicker if I painted both sides and propped them up to dry at the same time. Plus, I just put some paint on the paper and used that while painting, instead of the little dot on each one.

After they were all painted, I wrote down all of my date ideas (color coded as well!) Then I created this little printable. Download the free printable here!

I put the sticks in the jar, poked a little hole through the paper, put it on the ribbon, and tied it around the jar in a little bow!

And there we go! A handmade gift that cost under $15! I decided to give it to my boyfriend on Saturday, so the surprise wouldn’t be ruined when he read this post (since we’re technically celebrating Friday) and he loved it! I told him he could add dates to it and I’d create little popsicle sticks for those dates. I’ll keep you posted on my Facebook page of any dates he may come up with.

What did we learn today? You can give a romantic homemade gift that will add some romance to your relationship and it won’t cost you much!

Do you have any ideas I could add? The great thing about this is that I can keep adding to the jar whenever I think of a new date!

How To Make Your Own Grocery Bag Holder!

Hello and welcome back to my blog! I hope you’re enjoying it, please let me know if you have any comments or tips! You can leave them in the comment section or e-mail me at hackorslack@gmail.com.

Now, as you may remember from my post on Monday, I’ve been experimenting with Command strips. Well, I’ve decided to tackle another project and attempt to hang it with Command strips.

How to create your own grocery bag holder with 3 simple items!.png

I always have grocery bags just flying around my kitchen. I put away the groceries and they just get shoved somewhere or thrown away. I don’t want this because sometimes you just need a plastic bag to carry something. I looked into holders you can buy online or in a store, but none of them really fitted what I wanted. I didn’t want to screw holes in my wall and I also didn’t want it on my wall. I didn’t want it hanging on my door knob either. I decided I could easily make my own with a box, some wrapping paper, tape, and scissors! Who doesn’t have those things lying around? Well, I did.

20170205_154420

I grabbed all the things I needed and headed to my lady lair (yes, I  love calling my office my lady lair!) I had this adorable wrapping paper that I had bought at Target in the Dollar Spot, my favorite part of Target! I love all the cool things you can find there. I’ve found some adorable mugs there for only $3! Although, I always end up buying things I really don’t need, so I guess I need to work on my self-control! Haha.

I cut a hole in the top of the box then I taped the sides together. The hole isn’t very pretty. I don’t have an X-Acto knife, just the scissors. Then I wrapped it up and folded the paper inside the hole. It wasn’t very  pretty. I looked around my room for some ribbon, all I had was this blue ribbon from Christmas that I had never even touched. See, I have a habit of buying things I don’t need! It was just so pretty! So, I got out my Tacky Glue and glued it around the hole and it actually turned out pretty cute!

20170205_160254

Honestly, if I had planned this ahead of time and it wasn’t a split second idea I had, I would have gotten some matching ribbon. But this is just going inside my cabinet, so it really didn’t matter.

So, on went the command strips and into the cabinet it went! Guess what – it’s actually stayed!!! I did this on Sunday and I’ve put grocery bags in it and it’s stayed. I’m so happy about this! After those failed attempts with the cutting boards and wraps, this is just what I needed!

What did we learn today? Even though an idea may not work out for one application, you can keep trying it and maybe it’ll work in a different way. Also, it helps to have cute wrapping paper laying around for random ideas!

Do you have any ideas on how I can use Command strips? (I really should be getting paid for how much I mention them!) Or do you have any ideas on how I could get the other things to actually stay without putting a hole in my cabinet? I’d love to hear them! I’d also love if you could go check me out on Facebook, Pinterest, Instagram, or Twitter! Until next time! I hope you have a great weekend 🙂

Cleaning Up Kitchen Counter Eyesores

Welcome back! Today I’ve attempted some great solutions to organization problems in the kitchen. The first one deals with my kitchen counter. Now, I think a lot of people have issues with their kitchen counters getting cluttered, but it’s so much harder when you have a tiny kitchen. You would think with a boyfriend who’s a chef, he would have bought a house with a decent sized kitchen? Nope! Hopefully in the future we’ll get a house with a bigger kitchen.

Cleaning Up Kitchen Counter Eyesores

So, here’s one spot on my counter that I really cannot stand looking at.

Cleaning Up Kitchen Counter Eyesores

It’s a small little chunk of counter in between my fridge and oven. The cutting board, some pans, and that extension cord behind them just drive me crazy. What an eyesore! So what do I do? Of course I search Pinterest for answers! I found this idea where you hang a file organizer into the door of a cabinet and thought it would be wonderful!

The only problem is….I can’t do things like put screws in or whatnot. Also, my boyfriend would be upset if I messed it up. I decided to try out some handy-dandy Command strips to see if maybe that would work.

20170205_120605

So, I took some Command strips, a little hanging file organizer and put them together to hang up inside my cabinet. I pushed it on, put the cutting board in…it fell. I tried again…well, after pushing it on real firm, I realized this just would not work.

It just fell right off. Ugh. Well, all hope was not lost. I was armed with another organization idea too! This one has to do with my kitchen drawers and cabinets. I have different wraps and bags and whatnot floating around my kitchen. I don’t really have any one place to put all of them, so I’m left putting them in different random spots. I saw an idea (on Pinterest of course!) about putting them in a magazine holder aaaannnndddd….hanging them on the inside of your cabinet. I haven’t been able to find a source for this one, so if you know where it originally came from let me know so I can link them!

20170205_122806

I took out my Command strips, full of confidence. The package says it holds up to 16lbs. There’s no way this stuff is more than 16lbs, right? So, I put them command strips on, pushed them on real firm onto the drawer and magazine holder. It worked!

20170205_123259

I did a little happy dance. I shut the door, it still stayed on! I was thrilled! I had some running around to do, so I left the house for a couple of hours. I came home…it had fallen off. I didn’t take a picture because I was just so bummed.

Then, I looked at what I had…the file organizer took up much less space than the other thing I was using to hold the cutting board and pans. The big baking pans could just fit under my oven. Maybe, this could work on my counter top?

20170205_152510

It’s perfect! It’s hides the extension cord, looks much nicer, and takes up less space. I’m really pleased with this, even though it didn’t go quite as planned!

What did we learn today? Command strips are not some magical form of adhesive that holds everything, regardless of what I believed. But, just because things don’t go the way you planned doesn’t mean that they can’t still work out. I hope you enjoyed and if you would, please go ‘like’ my Facebook page. You’ll be able to see when I update my blog and also see the other good stuff I post there! You could also sign up for my mailing list to get my posts delivered right to your inbox!
